Around here (Germany), fresh figs lie with the rest of the fresh produce and the dried ones, along with other dried fruit, are sold close to pre-packed nuts and grains.

Same in the US. Dried fruits are frequently displayed next to the fresh produce with the nuts.

I don't understand why that would be weird?

Seems to me that fresh fruits belong in the fresh produce section.

Mariano's near me has them near all the fruit (fresh and dried ones) although the fresh ones are much more seasonal. They are, however, delicious.
