There has been an undercurrent of rage from the non-mainstream gaming press toward the AAAs and the AAA press over the AAA refusal to rail against Gamergate and demonize its members.
You know, when he puts it that way, it makes me wonder,
Makes me wonder if the AAA devs, the ones that refuse to be drawn into things, the ones that make ambiguous comments about wanting games for everyone and how all harassment is terrible but don't name anyone, are just sitting back and enjoying the show. Enjoying the journos making complete asses of themselves, divorce themselves from reality and the audience they're supposed to be selling to, and make absolutely nonsensical statements while the gamers relentlessly point out all the utter bullshit they spit out, dig all the corpses buried in the backyard, and collect all the skeletons they were hiding in their closets.
Just think about it. These are the morons who kept demanding perks and special treatment for their oh-so-special words of wisdom to come in support of their games. They had to be allocated a piece of the budget of every AAA title to get the press out there and the game sold. And now these corrupt snakes are eating their own tails in front of their very eyes. It must bring a tear to their eyes.
If I were a dev, and I could end the whole thing by coming out in support of gamergate... If I had that kind of pull... I'm not sure I would. Take a step back and look at the whole thing, it must be hilarious to watch from the distance. I wouldn't want the supply of schadenfreude to end either!
Meanwhile, they're doing what they do best. While McIntosh and Anita tweet and complain about all the oh-so-terrible, bring-my-fainting-couch violence in Fallout 4, the lack of exclusive female lead in Dishonored 2, and all the oh-so-unbearable mediocrity of anything and everything that's not made by the micro-indies that support their own patreons, the Pip-boy edition of Fallout 4 sold out worldwide in 24 hours, Shenmue 3 hit its KS funding target in nine freaking hours, and E3 damn near broke the internet with all the awesomeness that's coming out this year.
So, in a way, I may actually prefer if the AAA devs keep keeping quiet. It'll make sure the higher ups don't get too nervous, and there'll be laughs for everyone in months to come. In the meantime, we're gamers. We don't get tired of trucking along forever and ever. We've got this.

If this dude who digs Albert O. Hirschman is into Polanyi and Schumpeter, I'd definitely like to read Hirschman's stuff. Though I'm quite libertarian, and Polanyi was definitely a leftist, his article on fascism, "The Essence of Fascism" is one of the most insightful short articles on the perversion of philosophy I've ever read.
Also, the point about the split between gamers and the journos reminds me of the idea that to be a leader you get in front of a parade. The journos tried to do that and then took a turn that the people in the parade didn't want to take, but continued to think they were leading the parade.

Problem is these journos never led anything an army of outrage lunatics by telling them what they wanted to hear about games and gamers, as soon as they stray from the fairy tale of identity politics they will have lost that audience too.
They thought they were leading gaming into a new social justice era but all they really did was march their merry band of extremists off a cliff. AAA developers know this, a pretty significant number of indie developers know this, publishers know it but the problem is this "indie" press doesn't know it yet.

Agreed.

It really was a public relations no-brainer for the big devs to side with their customers, and it perfectly shows the lack of power and pull that the "journo's" really have. How did those journo's think that attacking their own audience would be a good idea? This is business 101. This whole episode will probably end up in a college level PR textbook as an example of what not to do. We are seeing that the emperor's new clothes amount to absolutely nothing, and it's pretty hilarious IMO.
