IMO it's an outdated system that people are becoming less and less willing to deal with. There needs to be something better. I'm not sure what that is, I'll admit, but the sooner ads go away, the sooner quality of life improves.

Also, It seems like every other week a new "OMG ADS GIVE YOU MALWARE!?!?" article comes out, because some big corporation is pushing malicious ads. It's not even a matter of preference anymore, it's a matter of safety.

It'll be pay-to-say

Brave lets you choose; you can see ads as served by the site, "clean" ads served through Brave's ad program, or no ads at all. If you choose no ads, you can also choose if you want to pay sites (automatically from your built-in Bitcoin wallet) or just have Brave act like a standard ad blocker.

I think it is a really good step in the right direction and am considering using the Brave-served ads in order to support the sites I like. But you can choose differently.

I'm skeptical that site owners actually get the bitcoins. How many site owners have signed up vs how many sites have been visited a day? Smells like BS to me.

Interesting idea. I'd rather pay money than see ads, but I don't want the hassle of setting up payments for each site I visit. With bitcoin it could all happen pretty automatically.

I don't like the current state of advertisements either, but I also don't want to see the internet turn into a bastardized version of cut up cable channel packages either.

Why dons't Brave offer a VPN integrated like Tor? I feel like that is the only thing it is missing.

Love the innovative ideas coming from Brave browser. Whether you like it or not sites and content production are costly.

I really like this. I don't get why there are always lots of negative comments about it. If you don't like ads, and you don't want to pay anything, then what do you want? Please, propose a solution. Hosting sites costs money, and at the moment the only viable monetisation strategy is advertising...which leads to profiling and tracking and spying and all that lovely stuff. More than that, the site owners know that the advertisers are their boss. They will make changes to the site to please the advertiser, not you. This is a fundamental problem that needs to be fixed, or before you know it, voat will be banning /v/fatpeoplehate because the advertisers found it distasteful.

When you get "free stuff" there's a sense of entitlement that inevitably follows. I agree that we need advertising or some kind of revenue to fund writers, hosting, and whatever other infrastructure and staff are needed for quality journalism or whatever. If everyone just wants "free information" then you'll get that quality - no wonder the internet is becoming a shithole of clickbait crap.

What's the point? Just install uBlock Origin, block all the ads and move on. If you like the site that shows you goat ads you can disable the blocking on that site.

The point is this way you can support a site without seeing ads or support it but see ads that don't track you and don't serve you malware. (Though someone will probably find a way to serve up some despite Brave's safeguards).
