I think a small amount of people could be supported in little biospheres with energy generated by wind or dams. Plants could be grown using artificial light, and oxygen could be regulated by them. I feel like the panic would set in pretty fast, and there is no way that people could be organised enough to sort anything that complicated out quickly enough in the dark, while contemplating their impending doom. If this was all set up beforehand then maybe a small group of people could live indefinitely.
If you dont have such a nice set up and want to survive, I would go someone to avoid other people. The panic and the fear that they will run out of food or oxygen will be enough to make humans more dangerous in an immediate way. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Without sun there'd be little to no wind, most water would freeze so dams don't work either. Nuclear would work though, but we don't have near enough time to create these biomes when the sun disappears.

Really? no wind? Makes sense.
Yeah, I dont think that anyone normal is going to be able to set anything like that up.

I buy the company Ray Ban and start making night vision googles. Oh, and I melt all of the existing sunglasses down and make insulation... lots and lots of insulation.

I would fill my bathtub full of water.
I'm not the "survival guy" at all, but apparently whenever any kind of catastrophe occurs, you want a bathtub full of water.

I think you underestimate the amount of heat the sun gives us.

We wont survive very long without the sun. The bombardement of galactic cosmic rays would really screw things up. The surface would be uninhabitable and the atmosphere would vaporize soon. We would have to live underground, but not entirely sure how long we can survive. Perhaps a colony on Mars is not a bad analogy.

I think we may actually stay alive quite some years and survive this mess.
Most of Earth warmth comes from her core and not from the sun. Besides that we will be in complete darkness we can survive as we can produce a lot of electricity from earth resources itself and light the planet up.
Edit: I've been schooled wrong information most of earth warmth comes from the sun itself. Although 10 percent comes from the core. The core itself generates it's warmth from radioactive processes which we could mimic ourselves if we concentrate world's population on a little spot until another sun catches us after some decades of surfing in space for some decades. The only thing i'm wondering is would we collide with another planet. Will another star catch us and make us a new solar system.

Not really. We need the sun for the plants, which use photosynthysis to regulate the earths atmosphere. We'd be fucked pretty quickly.
[–] umpaloompa ago
I haven't thought about that, but one google search said it's possible and even more cost-efficient to do so.

Hmm, did some very shallow digging, because I just don't accept the idea most of the earth's heat comes from the core. found this source which states that about 90% of the earth's energy comes from the sun, which means that without sun we'd pretty much freeze to death.
[–] umpaloompa 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago
I was taught that at school and I'm looking for sources that support my idea.
For the moment I found that heath in the core is made from radioactive materials. Which we can mass-produce if needed. To warm the earth.
We could hypothetically concentrates humanity in an very small area for a few decades until a new Sun catches us.

How do you explain seasons then?
[–] umpaloompa 0 points 1 point 1 point (+1|-0) ago
I'm at fault. School taught me wrong on the subject.

Yeah....The sun's positive effects on the Earth would be noticed immediately. There is no situation that the disappearance of the sun is a good thing. Like you said though, the core of the Earth is very, very hot. So humanity's best bet is to get underground as soon as possible and set up an underground civilization. This new civilization would have to last for millions of years in their new home as well. Since the sun disappeared, the Earth has become a space ship that's traveling in whichever direction it was going prior to the sun's disappearance. Eventually, our new spaceship will come near enough to a star, it'll get snagged in the star's gravity and HOPEFULLY, the icy Earth will thaw out and humans will be able to survive.

Hmm, I didn't think of relocate to the underground closer to the earth core. I more thought to relocate everybody (or the smart people) to places as Iceland or New Zealand where there are volcanoes who can produce warmth for us.
