What do you think about Schneier recommending this app/them using his recommendation to get people to use their app?

Since I don't know enough to know better than Schneier or Snowden, I would use Signal if I had privacy concerns. Their encryption is borrowed by others, and is considered the best currently available for this type of thing.

Not a fail, by design. Moxie Marlinspike is working with Google to get you to use their shit. See my comment below. He's also working with Google to integrate Signal into Allo.

The problem with Allo is that they didn't integrate signal's key pair encryption. Not that they were working with them.

I fail to see how an app can keep everything hidden from Google and the NSA. It gets displayed on the video memory, and Google can take snapshots of that screen. It can even record the keys you pressed bypassing the app security.

It sends 100% of your data through Google anyway, with unencrypted metadata and encrypted* messages, and does all mobile app management through Google's Play store, and requires that you don't run FOSS-only Android to use it....so yeah, no need to take screenshots.

  • - encryption is only future proof for a number of years, before computing catches up with present-day encryption techniques.

You can use the Google Cloud Messaging framework on your desktop now! Hooray! Provide your metadata to the government in one convenient place, and store your encrypted chats on Google's cloud until a point when it can be decrypted!

Fuck OWS. Moxie Marlinspike has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't want you using anything but Google services, especially on your phone. He even went so far as to threaten GPL developers with lawsuits to make them change their forks' names, despite not owning the trademark, and he's openly hostile to any effort to distribute builds outside of Google's ecosystem. He's gotten into bed with Google.

I'd use Telegram's encrypted mode over Signal (though the encrypted mode is only for mobile still).

You can use encrypted chat app Signal on desktop now | TechCrunch

'Signal, the encrypted chat app powered by Open Whisper Systems, is finally available as a desktop app. '

'We reached out to Open Whisper Systems to ask how they handled the desktop challenge and will update if we hear back. '

'What we do know is that Signal will now allow users to link their mobile accounts to a desktop app, so they can receive their messages on two devices. '

'In keeping with crypto best practices, Signal stores a user’s decryption key on their mobile device. '

' All users have to do is update Signal on their phones, download the desktop version at signal.org/desktop, and scan a QR code to link the new device. '
