I'm a bit out of the loop. What's going on with SC? Did it get a release date yet?

Yep. The same time as HL3.

Q1 2017 for the first person game (squadron 42), Q3-4 for the MMO (Star Citizen).

Make that 2018 and I'll believe you. They aren't good at hitting deadlines.

Did the journalist actually watch the video before typing that? He didn't find a massive 3D model of a city, he found some buildings and made a city out of them. Game journalism professional as always I see.

Also, blender represent! He probably should've turned up the samples though.

The wording of the article itself is a mess too. It really does sound like the author has no idea what he/she is talking about.

I think he typed it up as quickly as possible to avoid getting scooped, but that's not much of an excuse for not even watching the first few seconds of the video.

I just dont understand the absolute hate SC gets. Its trying to actually innovate and do without the cancerous publishers that are killing the games industry, and a bunch of gamers just piss on it for god knows why...

who needs cancerous publishers? these devs have just cut out the middleman. every time i hear about the game it's bc the fanbase is bent out of shape that they're selling another ship for $125 or $500 or whatever and not implementing content that they promised. admittedly i don't follow the game extremely closely, but i'm one of those people who does not preorder a game, and that includes donating to a kickstarter. i've done all that before, and you nearly never get what you pay for. i feel like that's what's happening with this game.

Publishers don't cause cancer, shitheads do.

While there may be a disproportionate distribution of shitheads within video game publishing, this has little to no relevance/impact with regard to the likelihood that SC dev leadership are shitheads.

Impressive for a game that will never be released!

So I had heard of this game but never actually looked into it. So I just now went onto their site and I don't get how you even purchase this game. Is this nothing more than a pay to win game because it looks like you are required to purchase the ships with real money?

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure either. It is straightforward enough to dump credit in, but I don't see why it's necessary for them in having two options of purchase with an additional ship to throw in. The games isn't even complete yet and it already has purchasable DLC.

I suppose it would make sense to me if I were closely following the project and was deeply involved with the community, but I'm not, and from my perspective, this all stinks to me.

Its not DLC in the sense that you can get everything with in-game currency. It´s like War thunder, pay to avoid the grind.

Their site is extremely awful. The game is a standard $60 for the full thing, but you can buy ships for real money (they are also buyable in-game). It is somewhat P2W but its not like Ubishaft or Squenix; Star Citizen actually needs the money as its how they fund the development of the game, because they have no publisher funding/controlling them.

So I take it you create an account and then buy one of the starter packages, then completing missions gets you in game money to purchase other ships and stuff? Also, what is insurance?

Wait. Is this data mining as in "I searched through some post compiled code files with a text editor and some knowledge of RegEx", or is this "I have a Ph.D. in Data Science and I used accepted methods of machine learning to run an algorithm across massive tables of data"?

These are two very different, both very legitimate practices, but in professional circles, only on is actually 'data mining'.

No hype here... but if you think about it, some day one of these games will be the real deal.
