I'm not a teacher but one of my best friends is. He teaches Bio and Physics and an intro to Engineering at a rural high school.
He bitches about the US-government mandated shit because it makes him spend more time doing useless paperwork than ever. He spends one night a week at school until at least 11pm (remember school gets out around 2:30) so he can do all the government paperwork and then get caught up on grading.
On the other hand, his school has been able to play politics between the federal and state governments. If one says "You must do XYZ or no funding for whatever" they can sometimes find similar grants from the other and most times it also lets them set more of their own curriculum. This is more common with the upper-grade classes and especially the Engineering stuff.
Exactly. My wife is good at school she's good at getting a's took 3 years of college and she remembers about 2% of it. I on the other hand suck at school and have self taught loads of things and got a lot of papers hanging on the wall even though I dropped out of college.
