It was about a year ago. Lots of people complained, but since most people are still going to buy Nvidia cards, they did it anyways.

So what you're saying is we need to decentralise the net?
[–] auto_turret ago
I'm in favor of corporal punishment for those responsible, unless they correct the problem.
[–] SkillYourself [S] 2 points 5 points 7 points (+7|-2) ago
Yes but apparently that is changing soon too.
[–] FireForEffect 0 points 7 points 7 points (+7|-0) ago
Oh.
That changes more than this, then. Once it becomes a dead set requirement to register to even so much as manually update a driver, I'll switch card manufacturers.

I don't own a nVidia card, but I have to say that such thing annoys me. A mandatory account for drivers? fuck you. I mean c'mon I just need a soft that will enable my gfx card to work properly with OS. Driver is the software in case, so why create account? I myself could care less about rewards and prizes. I do definitely care about my privacy. So hell no to this.
If amd tries this with their Radeon Settings Software, I'll rant about it.
I hope nvidia users will get their shit together and fight this corp.

To be exact, you don't need an account (yet) just for drivers. You can still d/l them yourself from the NVidia website.
The account and spying go along with GeForce experience, which supposedly automatically sets the optimum settings for your games and your system. Until I uninstalled GFE a few weeks back, I always bumped them up from the recommended settings anyway. I think they lowballed everything to make me want a higher powered card. I have a 970. I think my next card will be AMD, but I hate the shorty way they do card numbering.

Guess I exaggerated about drivers dl that need a mandatory account, but still as you mentioned (yet). It may not be now, but eventually they could introduce this. And I hate to say this may come sooner rather later, I hope amd will not come to this.

There's also a handful of new processes that access the internet embedded in the drivers. I had immediately uninstalled GeForce Experience after seeing the login screen, but the new drivers have:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\Update Core\NvTmRep.exe
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Update Core\NvProfileUpdater64.exe
That is in addition to all the usual stuff they already had for updates and other things. I think it was also sending data from powershell.exe and syswow64\rundll32.exe during install if I remember correctly.

That sucks. I liked shadow play.

Can the data collection be reverse engineered to feed false data?
[–] iamrage 0 points 5 points 5 points (+5|-0) ago (edited ago)
That would make for an awesome AdBlock type application. An application which would feed false data to any other application seeking it directly from your computer without your permission.

I love this idea! :)
[–] Ghetto_Shitlord ago
Probably, but their system would learn those patterns and eventually be able to throw that data out with good enough accuracy.

patching patching patching ;)

well, I don't know how programs access this data. From the registry? Some shared DLL? You would only have to fool those places which it is accessed from, or the calls at least.
