I feel bad because he and his friends brought a lot of people joy with their work back in the day, but he just didn't have the chops to steer the franchise into the future. My knee jerk reaction is to me mad at him for 'ruining' WoW, but I think I'd just rather hope that he has a happy life working on other projects

I think he regressed massively as a writer. "Let's take this revolution... Into overdrive!!"
His writing in the 90s made for pretty decent, if pulpy, videogame stories. In recent years he's been phoning it in and if I had to guess, I'd say he's been exposed to too much cringey nerd shit at conventions, inspired by his characters, to be able to take any of this shit seriously anymore.

If I was him, I'd retire too after destroying that many franchises.

The ultimate power over something you are responsible for creating is that to destroy it.

What exactly? They're still making money hand over fist. What is it with people here and hating things that make money?

I have a feeling that on some level, this guy is getting older now and looking back on what he's done and thinking, "Man, I fucked up. It's time to stop."
Yeah he made money, but that's because people buy hype, not good writing.
Thanks Chris, we all thought it was time to give it up quite a few years ago.

He should have retired after wotlk... just saying ;p
In all seriousness though, fuck him for taking away 10 years of my life...

He's gone out on top, Legion is a blast, and I said I was never coming back to wow. Livin the dream buddy, enjoy retirement.
I don't play games for story so I can't comment on that.

Metzen did some good work in the 90's and early 2000's, but for the last 15 years he's been a total hack.
The storylines, plot lines, and lore for all the games he's been in charge of since WarCraft 3 has been awful.
StarCraft 2's three games? Horrible, awful stories. Diablo 3? Embarrassingly awful. Every WoW expansion since WOTLK? Awful.
He regurgitates the same plot elements over and over.
A prophecy.
A powerful, chosen individual.
An invading threat.
Somebody gets "corrupted"
etc.
Same shit every game, every expansion.

Its hard to imagine the story elements of diablo 3 being any worse.
[–] gaiben 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
Diablo 3, after all the expansion's add on late game content actually made it a pretty decent game. The story mode is still garbage, but whatever.
[–] HughMungus 0 points 3 points 3 points (+3|-0) ago
Exactly, I can't even play WoW anymore because it's the exact same content while expecting different results.

Disagreed about Starcraft 2. For me, Starcraft 2 was a solid B to B+. Not as good as the original, it had its issues, but it was definitely enjoyable and worthwhile.

I liked StarCraft 2. I did find the writing awfully stilted and filled with clichés I'd expect in a StarCraft 2 fan fiction, but overall it was enjoyable.

To be fair, the story elements you mentioned are fairly common in games, movies, and TV series.
