While I agree that there should be health and nutrition classes in school, the crux of the problem is when that child goes home. If they have parents that don't give a shit and make sure the house is always stocked with pizza rolls, ice cream, etc. in never ending supply, then that child doesn't have a chance.

It's a great idea. The schools are filled with ABSOLUTE lies that cause problems.

  1. You must eat four portions of cereals-complex carbohydrates daily (bread, pasta, rice... you can eat those in moderation, but NOT if you are trying to lose weight! EDIT: and bread is still not the best option).

  2. You MUST have breakfast, it's the most important meal of the day. LIE! Created by Kellogg's to sell sugar + cereals, the WORST possible combination!

  3. You MUST eat five times a day, small meals. Great! So you need to spend HOURS in the goddamned kitchen preparing healthy food, and eating 300 calories a day. A wonderful way of feeling constant hunger (if this one works for you, congratulations, but for many of us, one meal a day and intermittent fasting provides much better results).

  4. Your metabolism slows down if you don't eat. Yeah, you bastards... An 8% after 36-48 hours of fasting! And the growth hormone spikes up!

  5. You can eat everything in moderation. If you're on your ideal weight, yes. If you're trying to lose a lot of weight, then NO, YOU CAN'T. Sugar and complex carbs are ADDICTIVE. They are designed to be addictive. No one in her right mind eats 8 lumps of sugar at once, they drink 8 lumps of sugar in a cola can, because the cola can is designed to be addictive. You have to go cold turkey, and the easiest way for many people to do so is... yes, fasting. When people need to lose more than 30 pounds, they are beginning to be addicted. And for an addict, it's easier to not eat anything all day and then enjoy one meal, than to cook healthily for 5 daily meals. And you save money.

But I still see people trying to convince others that fasting is dangerous, that they should eat FIVE times a day, and that if they spend 3 hours without food, they will balloon eating broccoli. This is not helping anyone. You cannot tell an alcoholic to only drink two spoonfuls of beer 5 times a day in order to recover. That would be stupid. The 5 meals a day nonsense has to go, at least for addicts. And let's face it: most people who get planet-sized are not merely lazy: they are addicts, and are trying to solve the problem without addressing it as an addiction. Trying to give up something you're addicted to as if it was just "I'm stopping collecting stamps" is doomed to failure.

And that will hardly get to schools, because the food industry makes millions.

It should be taught at schools, though.

are you saying "eating carbs in moderation is ok but not if trying to lose weight"? or that that's a lie?

I don't know if I wrote it correctly, but... yes. If you're a healthy weight, fit and on healthy food, a sugar-loaded homemade muffin, or your mom's lemon pie is not going to hurt you. If you're trying to lose weight, you should stay the hell away from complex carbs such as flour, pasta, and especially sugar. The only thing more demonic than sugar are trans fats, and normally they go hand in hand in industrial bakery. If a person has gotten to +30 pounds and unable to cut the gaining of weight, they are addicted to that type of food. Eating a bit is not a good idea. Best go cold turkey until ideal weight is achieved and maintained for at least three months.

I don't know what happens in schools today, but every year i had gym, and health class. In middle school half the year was spend in wood shop, the other half in home ec. There is education, they fail to pay attention.

K-6th, we had gym one day per week for 45 mins. We also had a 30-minute recess ever day where we'd run around, play sports, etc.

7th-10th, we had gym class every day for 45 mins.

10th-12th, gym was an elective. Most people skipped it because they didn't want to stink for the rest of the day (not enough time to shower & primp after class).

We have sex Ed.

You're assuming a lot about a lot of the US here. I agree these things should be taught, especially nutrition and sex ed, but even when they are it's incredibly shitty. My sex ed was essentially "here's some tampons and condoms, a video, and that's it". I think we also got soap. I didn't even learn that you couldn't get pregnant by being fingered till I was probably 13. I think you need to actually teach the material as well as comprehension for that to work, and now a days most people are too lazy for that.

I went to a Catholic school in Canada, and although it was government mandated that they had to teach us sex-ed, the classes heavily focused on abstinence. Sure, they mentioned all the other stuff like condoms and birth control, but we were told that sex and masturbation were sins, and if we did them we were going to Hell. It really messed me up for a while, and as a young adult I didn't really enjoy my sexuality.

Thankfully the government in this province has implemented a new & more comprehensive sex-ed program, and all schools are required to teach it in its entirety. They've also made homosexuality, bisexuality, trans-sexuality, etc. a mandatory component of the program too, which I think is awesome because when I was in school they told us that was a choice and a sin too.

This isn't going to happen because most public schools have whored themselves out to the big-food corporations. You will have walls of vending machines that sell both liquid and solid beetus. You will have cafeterias with fast-food chain stalls set up inside. Hell, even the younger kids are screwed too. I saw pictures of a kindergarten that sold out to Coca Cola and has the helpless tots sitting in branded chairs. Like fish in a barrel.

I looked hard for the pic of the kids sitting in the coke-branded chairs. Couldn't find any though. Might have been from a documentary called "That Sugar Film".

We never had this in our high school. We had one coke vending machine by the gym. Sure, our lunches were the typical chicken nuggets, salty mashed potatoes, rectangle pizza, etc. This was back in the '90s, though, and I know things have changed. I am lucky to live in one of the last remaining shitlordy parts of the US (Colorado) and they do make an effort to not have walls of sugar and junk available throughout the school day. The school that my son will be going to when he's in high school has a huge, lovely salad bar.

Don't change, Colorado!

My son just started middle school and at the open house the very fit PE teacher explained that the focus of the health portion of the class this year would focus on diet and nutrition. The PE focus was "becoming and staying physically active for your whole life." They are directly addressing the problem. Not everyone is buying the HAES bullshit.
