Did you ever end up playing Fire Emblem Fates? It was one of those games that caught a lot of hype or flack depending on who you ask, but I thought it was pretty good. I didn't enjoy it as much as Awakening, especially the story line, but I was impressed with how many hours of gameplay you can get out of all three paths.
Very good strategy game, but the plot was so idiotic and Corrin was such an unbearably weak protagonist in terms of personality that I can't say "this is where I want Fire Emblem to go".
Sounds like a good way to put it :P I think that Awakening was good in ways that Fates wasn't, and Fates added things that Awakening could use if it were done over again. If the next Fire Emblem game takes the good out of both games and puts them together, it could be something really cool. Hopefully they don't take the weak points of both games and put it together instead.
And I agree, Corrin was too much of an angsty teen at times. Robin came across as a calculating bad-ass with a heart of gold.
