Actually, unless you're having a medical emergency, they won't take you in (USA). If you want detox, it can be arranged in advance, and it may be performed at a hospital setting, or another setting, depending on your medical condition. To get admitted without prior arrangements, you need to be already experiencing significant symptoms of detox - you can't just walk in drunk.

Typically if you go to the ER drunk requesting detox, they may give you information, or call places on your behalf and those people might pick you up. If you're drunk enough, they may hold you while you begin to sober up, and then release you, even if you desire admission, if the admission is not medically necessary or not authorized by insurance. Typically as you sober up, someone might be calling the insurance company on your behalf seeking authorization for treatment beyond the emergency.

However, if you feel it's an emergency, or think you're actually dying, please go to the emergency room. Just saying you think you're dying isn't a magic automatic admission. On the other hand, if you say you're suicidal they may hold you for a psych eval.

Each private insurance company may use a different level of care or utilization guide, to determine whether or not your service (detox) is covered by insurance. If you have no insurance, you will still be evaluated and treated in the emergency room, but then discharged when it's not a medical emergency any more.

Here is New York State's guide to level of care https://www.oasas.ny.gov/treatment/health/locadtr/documents/LOCADTRManual.pdf

To clarify, the State may have medical guidelines to determine appropriate level of care, but independently the insurance company may or may not pay for the service if the insurance company determines that it was not necessary. Detox services, unless a medical emergency, usually require prior authorization before treatment begins.

Of course. They are happy to help you detox. Then they'll release you to get drunk again. Do you have any idea how much money is available in treating symptoms rather than cures. These are doctors. They're not stupid enough to pass up opportunities like that.

I don't think these doctors get paid by volume. Their bosses who own the hospital on the other hand would never hear of him not being treated and scold the doctors of fear of a lawsuit, or so they'll complain.

Assuming you were actually incredibly drunk, yeah, they would. If you're an alcoholic who wants to quit drinking but is currently sober then no, don't go to the hospital.

if hes sober, he is fine. physical withdrawls come more from the approaching soberiety. this is why many stay drunk
