Peppermint 7 looks cool, but with all the cloud crap they've pre-installed (most just shortcuts, I know) I'd have to gut it before it would suit my needs.

I actually tried this out not long ago, it's pretty good at what it does. It picks out what it considers the best XFCE, Lxde and Mint programs and bundles them into Peppermint. So you get the Lxde desktop with Xfce settings/menu and Nero file manager from Mint for example. The overall Polish is really good too. I didn't notice any active cloud stuff but there is a lot of shortcuts. I'd even recommend this over Mint.

Hmmm, well, I've got an old workstation I could throw this on, or I could make a VM. Maybe I'll have an in-depth look at it.

Most of the shortcuts are just there to showcase this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvDmK8CZF9o

Whenever someone wields the word "cloud" these days, I feel compelled to read the text twice to determine his exact level of shadiness. Well, turns out in this case it just means that a wrapper for interactive websites is pre-installed.
