Could you explain more? I never really watched 2001.

2001 was sorta mystical, and it was never fully explained what the monolith did, or where it came from, but it's a kind of higher power. Apes were behaving like animals on earth, until this monolith appeared mysteriously and the Ape learned to use tools. The very next scene is a spacecraft leaving earth. It's never explained what the monolith did - was it genetic? psychic? could it have merely sparked curiosity of seeing an obviously artificial finely crafted object?

Considering that it was made in the 1960's, 2001 was extremely ahead of its time. You can watch it today and while it may not seem entirely modern, it's absolutely a leap above any former sci-fi. You have to see it in that context. At the very end it gets kinda incoherent and I don't like that part of it, and the novel by Arthur C. Clarke is supposed to be much clearer, though I haven't read it. The movie came out before the novel, so it's an unusual relationship between the two.

total in context and yes the novel lays out the details of the monolith much more specifically. it also goes much farther into the details I personally like the editing of the film but it's all context. about my most v favourite film.

That does fit them within the context here then.
