Not in the medical field, but I have heard that people over a certain weight get sent to the zoo. I don't know how often that happens though.
I did also find this: https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-people-over-300-lbs-who-need-a-CT-scan-have-to-go-to-the-zoo-for-it?srid=uc7nI&share=13d5e10f

I'd imagine it wouldn't be worth it for most of them as specialized equipment( and maintenance) for lardbeasts would be too expensive.

I'm not saying it's common, just that I've heard of it happening. But who knows, it could be urban legend.
And a few zoos do have these machines. Bronx and Houston zoos definitely do. There's also veterinary schools.

That was interesting. Apparently you can get too fat for x-rays to be useful... that's crazy!

Well the zoos do have specialized equipment for dealing with heavier things.

Sometimes you can shove the fat down or up a bit depending on what you want to MRI. Amazingly, the incidence of claustrophobia amongst fats seems to be increased...

Took a look at open/larger mri machines on google. Most of the companie's selling points is fitting 4-5 people inside one machine.
I've been working in the radiology field for 10 yrs. my background is primarily In CT but I am MR trained and dying for experience.
So far in my experience the truly rotund just don't get the studies done. For instance, I use a GE CT scanner currently where the table has a weight limit of 500lbs. Over that? No exam. Can't fit in the gantry(big hole)? Sorry bro, no scan here. Can't find a vein in your gigantic arm? No contrast injection... Etc.

They get wide-bore or open MRIs (see here). The quality of the images is far lower than that of a closed MRI, however. Additionally, some studies cannot be done at all.

Wow those machines are so offensive. Taking worse images of fat fucks just because they're fat and can't fit in a real MRI. I better go make a post on tumblr about this.
/s (didn't think I needed it but you can't be sure)

To be fair, those machines are not designed for hamplanets but for those Dealing with those with claustrophobia for instance.
