Worked in corporate IT for a multi national and handed in my notice in 97. I hated losing the six weeks holiday and healthcare but it was a trade for sanity. The first couple of years were spent wishing for the phone to ring but after building up a client base it has been a good life. Went through expanding up to 10 employees and ended up stressed out again. Dropped back down to a single person operation and enjoy working a couple of hours a day with no stress. 10/10 would do it again.

I haven't, but I have some warning for anyone who is a technology worker (developer, IT, designer), ageism is real in this field. Look around you, notice how everyone is in their 20s-30s, where did all the older tech workers end up? Well unless they crossed over to upper management.... they've all be laid off. Don't expect your situation to be any different when you get older. At some point you will be forced out before you're ready to retire from work because the young guys are more malleable and energetic than you are.

I actually got fired, but I managed to start working as a freelancer and I love it. I'm making good money and I have enough extra time to work on building a real business. I hope to never have to work a real job where I'm not the owner of the company ever again.
