I find that Abraham knew even as he ascended Moriah, that God would not have him slaughter his son upon the altar: in I Moses xx.8, Abraham explains to Issac that God will provide Himself a sheep as an offering (also note I Moses xx.13). Though many often assume that Abraham merely said such to his son to pacify him, this statement rather displays the degree of his faith in God's consistent character and truth. It is also noteworthy that some twenty centuries later, God again provided Himself His own Lamb, and thus Abraham's words can also be understood as an early prophecy.
It's interesting that you bring up prophecy and Jesus on the cross 2 thousand years later, I consider this story a "type" (A figure or example of something future). Also in the following chapters Eleazar is commissioned to gather a bride for Isaac, it's intresting that Isaac is "edited" out of the text from the time he leaves the mountain till the time he is united with his bride.
Abraham=The Father. Isaac=The Son. Eleazer=The Holy Spirit. the bride=The Church
