I was hyped for this game more than a year ago, and since then went on a dramatic roller coaster of interest in it. Right up until launch I was still unsure if I was going to get it right away or not. I knew I was going to get it, but I was still really into another game and had big plans for the weekend that allowed for little gaming time. In the end, I got it.

I played for a handful of hours over the weekend, and I admit that I've never played a game like it. I love open explorer games, but I was left with a feeling of 'and then what'. A lot of my initial concern and cause for my pre-launch interest roller coaster was with the depth beyond exploration. As I played, and made some money and discovered stuff and learned some words, I found that the depth left a bit to be desired. Ultimately, it just seemed like grinding for money to increase room for more money grinding. That said, the initial draw for me was the exploration potential, which this game certainly provides.

I think this will be a game that I play a lot over the coming years, but also something that I can wait to play until I run out of interest in other games. As they add things I could see my interest increasing, but I'm not sure that I would pay for those updates. As it sits now, I'm satisfied that the game is what I expected it to be when coughing up the dough. On the other hand, it just doesn't seem to be deep enough to capture my current interest.

So far the best review I've read sums up my current opinion describing it as "A mile wide, but an inch deep".

I agree with this game being the canvas. This company holds a lot of potential for me, and I hope they do not squander it. It seems like they are in touch with the initial reviews both on console and PC and proactive in resolving issues.

Interesting outlook but a released game should be a painting with them adding more boarders or extra panels not the canvas needing paint. It is good that they are adding things but I'm not dropping full game money for things to come.

After around 4 hours or so the appeal wears off and it's repeatitive and boring. Sure the planets are different and it's amazing what they've done but the gameplay comes down to harvesting the same flowers or minerals, taking photos of weird animals, activating the same radio towers or bases.

Pretty much every time I try to engage in space combat I die, the space combat mechanics aren't that good. I'm now just rushing through it to see the ending and from what I've heard the 'ending' is pretty bad. I'd like there to be some big mission or a multiplayer raid or something... big game hunting, better space combat, base building, pirate raids (I want to board those big space ships!!) something to do other than passively picking flowers and photographing animals.

Haha I tried with no luck. I was flying towards it in sub hyperdrive speed (forgot the name of the speed) for about 5 minutes and got nowhere.

I have been. I have enjoyed it quite a bit. It is as close to my dream game as anyone has come so far. Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it fucking awesome? Hell yes!

I have no idea what I am doing. I can't even make Atlas Passes yet. And that is glorious.

There are quite a few non-game breaking bugs that need to be fixed. Some so apparent I wonder why they were not caught pre-release.

There needs to be a solar system map that shows the locations you have been to, and the locations you have pinged, with different icons.

The part I have found to be painful/repetitive is the interaction sequences. If I have 10 resources and want to do X with an NPC/Object 10 times I shouldn't have to open/close the long interface cycle 10 times. If I am offered something I didn't know I would be offered and want to back out to check my inventory to see if I want it, I should be able to. I lost a chance at a nice multi-tool backing out to check something. No big loss, but a little annoying.

I'm absolutely loving it. I guess my major problem so far is that is not barren enough. Every single planet, even moons, have ruins, space ship ports,, and abandoned buildings. I expected my first few planets to be totally uninhabited and honestly about of the 8 planets I've discovered not a single one was. Just doesn't seem to fit the narrative.

Been having a blast though, every time I log on I find myself wanting to work on something new. Spent all last night just doing drop pods. Spent every last credit I had so now need to keep on discovering things so I can afford to buy some more.

I have met two alien species. The Gek and the Ky'Veen. Both are pretty cool. Have learned about 25 words of the Gek language, so I have some minor luck understanding them. Ky'Veen is more like 5 words so I have no idea what they are going on about.

The system I'm in now has 2 planets and 1 moon. I'm going to try to get 100% of the animal discoveries on those then move on and see what else there is.

I am loving it so far.

I've got it on PS4 and have about 50 hours clocked so far. I've not felt the sense of scale in the size of the universe since the days of Frontier: Elite 2, which had a similarly sized universe, but was uglier and less varied. I enjoy the complete sense of freedom and the excitement of what's to come on the next planet or star system. I've been pleasantly surprised so far with the variety and the universe feels very cold and desolate, with the odd oasis in there.

It also reminds me lot of Out There, which I played on my phone, in that its a survival game that forces you to make decisions and be tactical with your inventory. You sometimes have to make a tough decision about what is more important to take with you, which can mean dumping something you'll need half an hour later or something that would have got you a few credits from a trader.

I like that the game makes little adventures and stories for you. So, for example, last night I was attacked by Pirates. I fought them off but it damaged my ship considerably. Critical damage warnings constantly. I had to land to make get resources for repairs. When I had landed I realised that I was on a very toxic planet with no supplies, no fuel in my launch engines and a Pulse Drive, Hyper Drive and Shield system that was in desperate need of repair. I left the ship, but the temperature at night time was so low that I had to wait until it was day time to make a run for a point of interest nearby. Getting there, heat was still a problem. I managed to eventually find a cave system and get enough resources to fix my Pulse Drive and refill my Launch Thrusters and found another, less hostile world, where I was able to gather enough resources to move on.

I also feel like I've only scratched the surface.
