My complaint with the article is they site the 2012 Yale study, but fail to note the much more recent study where it was found female applicants were more likely to be hired. Not to mention, I've yet to see an argument that clearly elucidates why the lack of women in a STEM field is bad. People are free to pick their chosen field and I just don't see the evidence that it is actually happening.
The implementation of the concept of free and equal opportunity does exist. The problem right now is that when the choices of a large group of individuals doesn't then line this concept up with equality in actual numbers across every field, SJW-types and the PC crowd jump on it and call it discrimination. As a result, what /u/bill.lee described is beginning to happen - the overcompensation of "equality" to create a perceived even playing field.
