I don't understand. Your gender, which is usually lines up with your physical characteristics, is nonetheless something that we allow people to define for themselves -- if you say you feel like a woman, no one can tell you you are a man.

Yet race, which is largely a made up construct and is often defined by one's upbringing and culture, is something that society views as determined at birth.

How can we let people choose their gender but not their race?
