You can fit an actual thought into a tweet in Japanese. Ideographic writing is a lot denser than alphabetic writing; a language where it's more common(or even exclusive) will take far less space than one where it's non-existent at the same font size. Another factor to consider is the grammar: some versions of the Bible, for instance, point out which words were added in translation and "a/an" and "the" make that list frequently(modern English is an especially bad offender in the "unnecessary" spoken grammar department: eg, when we say "do you like dogs?", German languages say what literally translates to "like you dogs?").
