For centuries Christianity was the main force of civilization in Europe, teaching people everything from compasion, to work ethics, to not farting at the dinner table; even The Inquisition, portrayed today as evil, was at the time one of the fairest and modern judicial systems in Europe. Believing in something bigger than us can be a strength, push people to accomplish great things... but yeah that childrens camp in the thumbnail is fucking bonkers.

Edit: I wonder if these individuals would be less bonkers if someone managed to persuade them God doesn't exist

That's an extremely one-sided recollection of history. Christianity was also the main force used to conquer and subjugate millions of non-Christians. Christianity is a complete contradiction of itself, since it (i.e. the Bible) teaches us to be both compassionate and ruthless.

European Kings baptised willingly, churches moved in and began teaching the new religion, a religion culturally and intellectually considered superior to paganism. As far as I now that is how it worked in most of Europe.

What does "subjugate millions of non-Christians" even mean when talking of Europe a thousand years ago? Are you saying they would have been free people if not for Christianity?

Its all bull shit the reason the major relgions all got cemented was due to the printing press. Then actual spread of knowlege people stopped truly believing a long time ago but governments and evil people knew the power over the masses relgion allows. Also for a long time relgious peoplenfor some reason were more willing to go to and die in wars because thry figured they were going to heaven

I found this hilarious and hideous.

Here is the deal. There are many great stories in the bible. There are also many stupid and fucked up stories in the bible. It's all about perspective and remember that MEN wrote the bible, not god.. I think spirituality can be an amazing positive force in peoples lives if you have the right mindset with it. Don't become dogmatic, or thinking your way is the only way to think or view the world.

No one can prove that God exists, and no one can prove to that he doesn't. But the Idea that greater forces than myself (such as gravity) hold this universe together is one the most beautiful and humbling things I can imagine.

Edit: took out a dumb sentence....

It's a bit odd that you call it a business but ok I'll grant you that. However, I've never encountered yet a Religious person, assembly or church claim they were perfect or infallible. I'm sure there are some wackjobs (small minority) who might claim it. Where does this false claim that people of any faith claim they are perfect or without faults?

Wow.

Love that senators reply "There is no IQ test to be a senator".

Maybe we need to pass an amendment creating a minimum base education and IQ to run for office.

It's a scene from Bill Maher's documentary, Religulous.
