Should this be unstickied, or have the headline changed, now that voat has VC backing and were even offering refunds to people who donated?

Hmm. Bummer that Voat won't be getting the attention it deserves.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned #bitcoin-otc on Freenode. Give it a shot if all else fails. But watch for scammers ;)

Awesome to have this as sticky. Can we add Cavirtex.com for Canada?

As soon as I get more coins I'll slide another $25 under the door. Coinbase is being a bit of a pill and has my bank transfer from last Wednesday still marked as "pending".

I'd also like to +1 adding changetip integration. I'd micro-tip the hell out of sane mods and contributors.

Edit: As a side note coinbase is offering a $25 referral bonus (you have to deposit $100, though). I'd be willing to kick the $25 over to voat and list it as on the behalf of the username of anyone that wants to do it (so you get whatever wacky sticker/icon they're going to paste next to your name).

I won't post my referral url unless the mods/users think it's kosher. But if a few of us coinbasers do it it may add up to a decent level of coin.

Usual disclaimer for you to do your own due diligence to make sure coinbase is a good fit for you.

Edit of my edit: Offer rescinded. The referral url spits out my IRL full name.

Holy Fuck, Coinbase.

Sorry.

$25? They already have like 46 XBT, no need to donate that much.

Being one of the few Reddit alternatives that accepts bitcoins for services will give Voat a leg up. Not a bad idea either. If anything I'll be throwing in more than my 2 cents for helping out Voat as I've seen pieces of the /r/bitcoin community come here already.

I saw on the site maintenance page that donors would get some sort of recognition for it, how're they going to verify this?

I don't know much about Bitcoin, but someone once told me you should never use the same address twice, isn't there a way to generate a new address for everyone who wants to donate? Or is it not that important in this case?

It's a good rule of thumb to not reuse addresses, but you can get away with it as long as you understand the repercussions.

  1. It's bad for your privacy. Everybody can see every transaction you make. (Not a big deal in Voat's case.)
  2. It's bad for the privacy of people who send you money. (Say you want to donate to Wikileaks, but they always reuse addresses. Not cool.)
  3. If your address was created using a faulty random number generator, then it's possible that reusing the address could allow attackers to compromise the private key by analyzing transaction signatures.

Voat's address reuse is not ideal, but it's kind of nice because we can share the address around, or put it in the sidebar. If they had a proper donation page, then it would be good practice to avoid reusing addresses.
