So, I've donated a few bucks but here is my question: on Voat's too-much-traffic panic page they say you can get a badge for donating... I'd like that. Who do we call about it?

You know, everybody loves worthless meaningless tokens of appreciation ;)

I think I read somewhere that you can send the transaction ID to hello@voat.co... Not certain though.

Done and did last week or so.

I just wish they wouldn't reuse the address though :\

I wish they'd use the very easy to implement Mycelium Gear scrypt. It would go nicely in the sidebar. It's deterministic, so addresses aren't reused.

Funny you say that, same thing. Just checked way later, and now I can register. So that I can subscribe to places, glad to see that things are working well over here.

Being one of the few Reddit alternatives that accepts bitcoins for services will give Voat a leg up. Not a bad idea either. If anything I'll be throwing in more than my 2 cents for helping out Voat as I've seen pieces of the /r/bitcoin community come here already.

I don't know much about Bitcoin, but someone once told me you should never use the same address twice, isn't there a way to generate a new address for everyone who wants to donate? Or is it not that important in this case?

It's a good rule of thumb to not reuse addresses, but you can get away with it as long as you understand the repercussions.

  1. It's bad for your privacy. Everybody can see every transaction you make. (Not a big deal in Voat's case.)
  2. It's bad for the privacy of people who send you money. (Say you want to donate to Wikileaks, but they always reuse addresses. Not cool.)
  3. If your address was created using a faulty random number generator, then it's possible that reusing the address could allow attackers to compromise the private key by analyzing transaction signatures.

Voat's address reuse is not ideal, but it's kind of nice because we can share the address around, or put it in the sidebar. If they had a proper donation page, then it would be good practice to avoid reusing addresses.

I donated when the voat servers were down due to FPH migration and maybe bad actors (Had to find the address on reddit, yuk). Please keep it real here! This style of website is awesome! RIP Arron! We remember the cool shit you did!
