Pokeymon was popular when I was in 5th grade. I thought it was gay. Flash forward to now and I still think it's gay.

I never had money to buy the cards and thought it was silly but this is free and I thought my kids might like it so we checked it out. Yep, still gay. They don't like it either. Geocaching is similar without the silliness.

Right, just replace the sense if intrepid discovery and human connection from geocaching with corporate data mining and empty, depth-less gameplay that relies on brand recognition and fanaticism.
Edit: A word.

Its not a ripoff of Ingress, it is from the same people as Ingress. Its basically Ingress with a Pokemon skin and some AR stuff.

Young coworkers explained how this worked to me this morning. If they replaced those stupid Pokemon characters with something else, I could easily see this catching on for soccer moms or other target groups. Like use hot Fabios and other hunks. Or maybe even inanimate objects (like sports cars or fishing equipment for dads). Pokemon is just too big of a leap for us older folks. We don't get the appeal. There may be a few bandwagning, but generally I don't find too many Pokemon enthusists over 35.
Even without you oldfags it's still the most downloaded mobile app ever. I am not one, for the record

Sure it gets downloaded, but that doesn't mean it's kept or played. I've talked to three people who said they downloaded it, and then deleted it an hour later.

it's just pokemon flavored ingress which itsself is simply Multiplayer Google Maps.
