Back in the day there were TONS of online games using flash. You'd get all kinds of weird online games from fads, most of which have been ripped off and are now apps in apples/androids appstore. I don't know about any direct ones to cash on a fad, but I know plenty of ones that were free due to a fad, and were ripped off to cash on their popularity.

For me it was WH40k: eternal crusade. I was active on the forums and paid to get early access played about 20-30 hours and just stopped.

Keep in mind this is still early alpha and it is a pretty fun game, think spacemarine but open world. I will probably play again once it actually releases but atm I've lost all interest

According to the Wikipedia page, that game (complete with the persistence and progression features missing from the alpha) is supposed to release before Q4 2016

To me eternal crusade is a failure, unless they take another 3 years I dont expect to see a finished product.

I can think of one that is currently in development and might be released when the fad is over: Star Citizen.

Yeah but Star Citizen started the fad.

DJ Hero was released right on the tail-end of the plastic instrument fad if I'm not mistaken.

DayZ, still not released, but the zombie fad is fading.

There was this game on PS3/PC called Retro/Grade. It's a shmup that uses a lane based system and was designed around the use of a guitar controller. It came out after Rock Band 3 IIRC, which was on the tail end of the button mashing rhythm games itself, so the whole gimmick was lost by the time RG came out. It was really fun still though, and playable with a normal controller.
