Star Wars: The Old Republic. They wanted to make a WoW theme-park MMO in space, which people thought would have been amazing when it started development, but that people didn't give a flying fuck about when it released because they were tired of WoW and MMOs in general.

Strife from S2 Games. They already had a MOBA, HoN but they wanted something more casual and less complex. By the time they made Strife, Dota 2 and LoL already have their users and those new to MOBA's are either picking one of those two or quitting MOBA's.
It's not that the fad was over, but the honeymoon phase of the new genre is over. They already have their player base.
S2 fucked up so bad with HoN though. All that shitting on customers. Early Access heroes. HoN could have been great, but they fucked up from very start. Should have gone F2P from very beginning instead of buy to play. Which contributed to LoL becoming big. Management was shit too. I heard that Maliken was horrible with his staff too.

All the survival games wherein you had no real goal other than to craft stuff, ya know, all the games that wanted to be minecraft after minecraft was already big. Only one that gained ANY traction was terraria, and only then because they had significantly unique ideas an mechanics, and they STILL ripped off minecraft for about their first year or two.

I mean, the only reason Goat Simulator got popular was because Pewdiepie did some Let's Plays with it. Would have never been noticed otherwise.

Literally every survival horror that tried to rip of Day Z. Oh wait! You said released... and not trapped in limbo.

Back in the day there were TONS of online games using flash. You'd get all kinds of weird online games from fads, most of which have been ripped off and are now apps in apples/androids appstore. I don't know about any direct ones to cash on a fad, but I know plenty of ones that were free due to a fad, and were ripped off to cash on their popularity.
