If I think something needs more visibility I upvoat. If I think it needs less I downvoat.

I'll upvote almost every comment that is a reply to one of my comments or submissions. You have to submit something really useless for me not to upvote, and you'd have to be terrible to receive a downvote.
As for other everyone else's comments and submissions I kinda just go with the flow. I try to both dissect comments logically and try to really feel out the situation.

I refuse to downvoat just because I disagree with a post.
I will downvoat for a shitty post: excessively argumentative, the poster goes for the ad hominem, and especially if the post relies too heavily on anecdotal evidence,
I will upvoat if a post is good, coherent, thought provoking or funny. Even if I disagree with the post.
This is how I have voated from my joining.

I up vote original, interesting posts and down vote the foul mouthed trolls.

The only time I downvote, it's manhood101 which haven't been a problem for a while now.
I try to upvote as much as possible, but I run out quickly.
Also, I don't get on here as much as I would like.

I upvote everything so that when I revisit the page I know what I've already seen and I can just scan for stuff that hasn't been voted on. If I don't like it, I'll downvote instead for the normal reasons.

Ah, the functional upvote. I haven't seen that one before.
