The only time I was ever shamed when we were on food stamps was when I spent $20 on groceries, $4 being on 1 steak. That one on sale steak was used with the frozen broccoli and rice and fed 3 people for 2 meals. The rest of the groceries were staples, milk, eggs, potatoes, and some cheese slices for the kids sandwiches. But even seeing all that on the counter the cashier still said " wish I could afford to buy steak" when I pulled out my card. Because I had one $4 steak, that was on sale. Of course she didn't look like she had ever missed a meal. People are going to complain, criticize and make excuses no matter what.

Poors are seriously the most bitter about other people getting help. "If I can do it, they can do it." Only the weak need to control other people's economic security like that. I'm really just pissed that so-called intelligent social commentators believe this BS. If it's some intersection of condishuns, fucking say it. Don't say it's so common sense that produce is more expensive when it's not.

It's not. Prepackaged meals and meats are the most expensive. The only issue I had with fresh produce when I was on food stamps was shelf life. So unless I could cook it that week I didn't buy it, I bought frozen instead. Sweet potatoes last forever, as do carrots. Heads of romaine last way longer than the bagged stuff, and the bagged baby carrots are tasteless compared to real ones. Fats only want convenience, and can't fathom doing any work for themselves even if it's minimal compared to the alternative. The fat cashier that made a remark about my steak probably thought I was feeding my kids sandwiches while I had steak, I doubt she could comprehend that it was a part of a meal because chopping meat is work.

Fuck that. I live in an actual urban food desert and I still manage to live quite well on $20 a week in fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat, frozen vegetables, milk, eggs, etc. All from my local Save a Lot which is basically 90% cheap processed crap. Without fail, on every shopping trip I see welfare hams loading up on shit like frozen pizzas and TV dinners. It's ridiculous.

And the "I don't have the time to cook" excuse is the stupidest shit ever. You don't have to make fancy-ass lemon infused teriyaki chicken souffle seasoned with the tears of Tibetan monks. Plain meat or eggs take like 10 minutes tops in a pan to cook evenly. Same with whole grain pasta. Fresh fruit and vegetables don't even need to be cooked. You can eat milk or yogurt right out of the container. There is literally no excuse to eat processed shit.

Yeah, like in my town we had a corner-store-type grocery and a meat locker. Everything was marked up equally, so there really was no incentive to buy junk. They seriously just don't have their shit together enough to work that 10 minutes cooking and cleaning up. What the fuck, all the families I knew that ate crappy like mine also used paper plates AT HOME and all kinds of convenience products but needed assistance to buy their kids paper and pencils for school. WHAT IS THIS DISEASE. THIS IS HOW STORIES LIKE THE COUCHWOMAN HAPPEN.

Well stated!

The calories for dollar approach might be valid if just getting your 2000-2500 calories per day was hard, but the average person is consuming 4000- 5000 easily, and obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc. is rampant.

I eat plant based now, and it isn't that costly. I cannot always buy what I want, and tend to grab stuff on sale, but I am happy and my health is excellent in my 50's. I spent way more when I ate what I call "the Men's health diet" (based on the magazine) where I was eating tons of meat, and I spent a lot more way back when I was eating the drive thru window, and frozen pizza/dinners diet.

I live right near one of the country's biggest food deserts. My town is basically split in half--the poor half and the rest--right down what is 7th street in most of the city. Everything to the West is somewhere you wouldn't want to go alone, ever, even in broad daylight.

And yet majestically, the obese population there is not any bigger than the obese population in the rest of the country, statistically. Because no matter what shitty food they have access to, they know how much of it to consume. It's not rocket science.

I just bought 20lbs of potatoes for $8 yesterday. I spend about $35/week on groceries but it could easily be more like $20 except I'm a sucker for blueberries since they're available at the farmer's market. And my diet is 95% fresh fruit and vegetables.

Buying fresh vegetables and fruit doesn't have to be expensive, especially when you make sure to buy what's in season. It can be really cheap too if you live in a town with lots of fruit trees. My town used to be mostly orchards so every summer people advertise free apricots, cherries, and apples if you come and pick them yourself. Plus you can grow vegetables which seriously saves so much money, especially when you grow spinach and lettuce because you can pick them every day.

These people complain about healthy food being expensive but that's just because they want to eat expensive processed vegan pizzas or blueberries in December. It's pathetic.

Yes! and then you can make your own jams and salsas and pasta sauces, or just can and freeze the fruits and veg for the winter, thus saving you even MORE money. But that would be work and learning a valuable skill, so hams will have none of it.

oh, definitely. I'd say the ideal diet here would start more at like $50/week here (the low-cost budget according to USDA, too), but my ham peers are spending that much just maintaining the caffeine-sugar-sludge that is their blood. They complain about money every fucking day.

I went to the store the saturday night and bought raspberries for .99, a big bunch ofradishes for .79, romaine for .99, 4 cucumbers for .25 each, 4 kiwi for .25 each, and a carton of grape tomatoes for .99. That's $5.79 for food that I'm still eating... and I live in NYC, so I imagine there are cheaper places to buy food.

It is just stupidity. Here is my example.

When I first hired in at my job (Telcom technician) I was made fun of for carrying a cooler, liquid thermos and a food thermos. Yet they show up everyday with a carryout coffee, buy soda from the vending machine, and have to stop at a fast food place for lunch .

Coffee $1.00 Soda. $1.00 Fast food $8.00

They spend $10 every workday. $50 to get through the work week.

I explained this. Their response was " I don't have the time." Because it is so hard to dump a pot of coffee in a thermos, microwave a meal for 3 minutes in the morning and fill my cooler with soda and snacks. Compared to stopping every morning for coffee and wait in line at a fast food place.

Lol. Coffee $1. Where the hell do you live? Coffee at 711 around here is minimum two bucks. We all know people are too good for 711 coffee. They have to get their mocha latte milk infused stuff at Starbucks for $4.

It's sad how common this this....for people to completely throw money down the drain because they are too lazy to cook, too lazy to think ahead of time. Then again, I think many of them know the reality of it, and they simply prefer to stuff their maw with garbage. It's what they like, it's what their fucked up tastebuds are used to.

My example would be quite like yours. Same bullshit. They piss 50-100 bucks a week down the drain, moan about not having any money, moan about not feeling well, and then find shitty stupid little remarks to make sport of my food choices, and the fact that I'm not an obese tub of lard. At least at my job, I'm allowed to make stabs back. My clever shit-lording has actually caused quite a few people smarten their eating habits, and stop pissing money down the drain.

I know this isn't food hate, but what makes or breaks it where I work is being on your feet, having a pleasant disposition with customers, and physically being able to do your job. If you eat garbage 24-7 it interferes with all of that, it's so damn obvious. If you want to eat garbage, fine...but if it affects your moods, and your ability to do your job than you need to cut it out, and eat right.

It's crazy how local Wal-Marts have cheap produce and PEOPLE ARE STILL SO FAT.

I hate to rub salt in your wound but here in Arizona a local grocery store just had roma tomatoes 3 lbs for 99 cents, peaches, nectarines, and pineapple 3 lbs for 99c, white onions 2 lbs for 99c, red bell peppers and cucumbers 4 for $1, avocados and mangoes 5 for $1. I've basically been eating vegetarian for the last week because I couldn't pass up getting 20 lbs of produce for a couple bucks. If it makes you feel any better I envy your guy's ability to get fresh fish and game up there.

I live in Alaska too. The worst you see is during the winter when grapes hit $5.99/lb or berries are $6 a small container. But normal vegetables are STILL not that expensive. It's comparative. When minimum wage is $10.80 in your area, $1.99/lb for tomatoes isn't bad. And plus if you get frozen veggies, shop smart, and get lots of basic stuff it's not too bad here. Summer though is amazing for produce
