Other somewhat useful apps that work(ish) offline:

  • Nokia Here maps. I drove all over Europe with these, and what's nice is that unlike Google Maps, the offline cache feature is very cut and dry: choose a country, download it, and you're good.
  • TripAdvisor: There are a bunch of city-specific TripAdvisor apps you can download, or you can use the main TripAdvisor app to download content for a specific city. While the GPS locations are seldom exactly right, it is a decent way of finding a nearby bistro in Paris.

Another pro-tip: Get an unlocked GSM global phone and don't bother with offline. It's often the case that you can quickly and easily buy an inexpensive data SIM card at the airport.
