I always feel guilty, and try to rub my dog to let her know that i didn't mean to kick her. It's like an abusive relationship.

My dog understands as long as there is a treat in it for her.

I think about this on the occasions where I do something stupid that has an adverse effect on the dogs. But by now I'm pretty sure they just know I'm an idiot.

"Oh come on, Glitch - how much longer do we have to put up with this asshole? He's as dumb as a box of hammers."
"Sure Uggs - you figure out how to work the noisy thing that opens those metal food boxes? Until you do we're stuck with Mr. Opposable Thumbs."

Cats think anything other than feeding them is a mistake or a waste of time.

I always make it a point to correct this mistake by immediately reaching down, scratching those floppy ears, and apologizing profusely with a proper belly rub and maybe a treat.

I used to have this big black mutt, sweetest dog I ever knew. We got him when he was about a year old and I was maybe six or seven. He took to sleeping outside my door at night, and I loved him for that loyalty, but he was so darkly hued that if I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I'd sometimes trip over him in my rush. He was smart though, eventually he started getting up out of the way when he heard the doorknob turning, then he'd go right back to his spot once I was done and back in bed.

I even do it to dogs that aren't mine. I know they don't understand, but I honestly just can't trip over them and not try to make amends for it.

Then they start intentionally dancing around your legs so you trip over them so they get attention. lol

Exactly. I've seen dogs make mistakes and try to compensate for them. So I know they understand what it means to accidentally do something you shouldn't have. Why someone would think they wouldn't understand this in a pack mate is beyond me.
