I've since tried a few pieces and it seems to work fine. I would guess that it's important that the paint be thoroughly dried (as in days, not hours), and that the router runs at the right speed (i.e., so as not to generate too much heat).
Thanks, that's helpful. It's just a couple of coats of ordinary, oil-based outdoor paint. I'm sure the routing will make a big difference in how the treads look. (I didn't have one when I first made them.)
