Personal beliefs aside I think that there's a connection between criminalizing an activity and a proliferation of that same activity. Banning drugs has led to the never ending war on drugs -- people can get what they want relatively easy, banning alcohol didn't stop people during the prohibition from obtaining alcohol, and even when areas have strict gun control laws people who want to have a weapon for whatever purpose are going to get them.

I don't think that we will ever see guns strictly banned in the U.S., maybe regulated as to which weapons can be purchased and which weapons can't. Although the reason for the 2nd amendment may have been a hedge against the threat of the federal government abusing its powers to the detriment to the citizens -- which may be pointless today since the strength of the army comes not from sheer numbers, but rather from sheer firepower -- I believe that the 2nd amendment will likely stand for as long as this country exists, in some form or another. There will always be people who engage in criminal activity, and will find a way to obtain the instrumentalities necessary to do so, so I don't think banning ownership of firearms will do much if anything to prevent that.

I don't agree that guns should have a heavy presence in schools, other than from a trained peace officer, and I certainly wished we lived in a society where this was unnecessary, but unfortunately we don't.
