Having lived in a few different countries (including the US) I can think of quite a few.

Also those they staff usually end up spending their whole careers there.

Is that supposed to be a good thing? Sounds more like an entrenched public sector union where no one can be fired.

The point of the lifers is that it pays well and being a driver is a very coveted position. Good pay, great benefits.

USPS is shit. They might be better than some other government run postal services, but when if they truly were better, then companies like FedEx, UPS, DHL and others wouldn't exist. The USPS only exists because Congress says it needs to.

I don't want a monopoly, no one does, but if it were free enterprise the post office would be out of business.
