I wonder if it didn't download while you were on WiFi like a week ago, then decide not to install because it was low battery, and maybe you charged it enough to trigger the install.
You did say it was a laptop.

My guess is you either connected to a network without realizing it, forgot you were connected to a network, or it found an unsecured network? You can't honestly expect a correct answer from such a vague post. I'm not going to play 20 questions if this is really a anti-Windows 10 circle jerk.

My default answer is always to blame the user when it comes to posts unless I know they are intelligent and know what they are doing.

My wifi radio is turned off and there aren't any unsecured networks around here. It doesn't take a ph.d. in computer wizardry to turn shit off.

You must not work in IT.

Still defaulting to user error because If your actual radio is off and you aren't hard wired in -- then the OS isn't going to turn on the radio to reach out and get updates. And also because of your attitude. That's the same kind of attitude that start off with "I didn't touch anything!"

Odds are you downloaded updates previously and have just been delaying them somehow or another.

Either one would make sense if I was actually able to access the internet here.

The only way it could have downloaded in the past 6 days is if it turned the wifi radio on by itself then connected to a cell network on its own or hacked into a neighbors secure network.

Man, am I glad I never upgraded to windows 10. I'm on win7 with that new update they pushed and every possible telemetry to microsoft turned off via hosts file or uninstalled update. My ram use is under 500mb when idle. I genuinely recommend rolling back to windows 7 or 8, or installing linux.

Your PC will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

It could have been downloaded a long time ago and was waiting in the wings for the go-ahead. Microsoft did not roll out 10 upgrades to everyone at once. The upgrades initiated in batches AFAIK. Did you notice ~8GB mysteriously disappear from your laptop at any point prior?

Windows 10, designed to connect to the NSA behind your back even when you pulled the cable. Now imagine that you are a big enterprise and one of the Windows 10 PC's opened a wide open security hole by connecting to the wifi of the neighborer.

Windows 10 is one giant worm.

That is exactly why I have no Wifi on my PC.
