I've seen really nice water simulations before running in a GPU, or even on HTML5 browser based one, but they don't tend to have that level of complexity and they have some interesting bugs, like generating enormous waves when you slowly sink and stone through the surface.

And this isn't even on the most powerful of GPUs let alone the latest versions of software as what is shown here is still in beta.

While what they show there is really nice, it can be achieved VERY easily in realtime. I don't know where these guys are getting their too difficult to do in realtime because that is simply not true unless you are using MASSIVE amounts of particles for no reason.

So in the end, this is easily doable in realtime. Whether or not this one was done like that is unknown. However using a couple of extra GPUs, you'd be surprised at what is possible. As for a render farm? No way they would have trouble doing this. No way man. Nope.
