I had learned about that originally in Machiavelli's Discorsi. That chapter may make good supplementary reading: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Discourses_on_Livy/First_Book/Chapters_XI-XX#CHAPTER_XIV
(And while you are at it, read the whole thing. Discorsi is even better than Principe for anyone interested in politics and history.)
