A lot of them have been obsolete since the invention of the mechanical cotton picker.

Maybe someone with economics background can chime in. What would be the long term ramifications of the unemployment % if all restaurants went this route? Assuming the government doesn't step in in mess things up or 'create' jobs would unemployment increase? My thought is that first you factor in the increased jobs in machine manufactoring and tech support. Secondly if you factor in the money saved by the consumer, wouldn't those saved funds just be used somewhere else, and in turn create other jobs in other sectors? I just don't understand how automation means less jobs.

I wonder if we will have another Luddite like riot because people would prefer to slack off than, you know, try to pass highschool?

The majority of fast food workers are full time, over 25 with a high school education (~30% with some college education). It's not a job for high school kids anymore. It's a job that people who are desperate will take.

Sounds like they should have tried harder in school.

Also, can you source your information?

I was going to say no that they are already to lazy to riot, but that would obviously be incorrect. They're more than happy to riot and burn their own neighborhoods down along with all the stores that provide them services.....so maybe they will?

Ironically stores in those areas have to raise their costs becuase of the higher losses they sustain in theft and vandalism, while the news reports that they are 'taking advantage of the poor.'

In this case at fast food restaurants I'd rather have the machine as it's just as easy for me to enter in what I want and any mistake made would be my fault. The cashiers don't like dealing with the customers because the customer is always right and any complaint made legitimate or not is the cashiers fault. At grocery stores it's much faster to have someone working there scanning the items than it is to use the self-checkout.

I refuse to use those stupid things ever. Heck, if a place even has those at all, it makes me want to shop there less.

You, and people like you, are the reason why customer service won't go fully automated. Not that it's bad, but it's natural. I imagine even at these restaurants they will have one person at counter and 2 machines that you can order at too.

Me too. They should give me a discount, 1%, or something to save them the money of an employee plus benefits.

And they only have themselves to blame.

Honestly getting rid of the customer service aspect would make fast food work less stressful.

No one wants to deal with fat entitled customers who can not cook for themselves, and who can not even afford to eat at these places.

They really can't automate the back room bit.

the employees should be inspecting shipments, they would understand what needs a repair ticket and what does not, and they would be able to really clean a bathroom.

AI is not good enough yet. It probably won't be for a good 20 years at the earliest. In fact all these new food kiosks are fundamentally bastardized atms.

Laid off fast food workers might be overqualified for the TSA.
