Yeah, I mean introspection is good sometimes, but too much is definitely dangerous.

Good thought.

I disagree.

First of all there is no dichotomy here. You can teach children about the beauty, complexity, and ugly aspects of the world outside and also about the beauty, complexity, and ugly aspects of the mind and psyche.

Secondly, learning when you're dwelling on a subject is the first step to stop dwelling on it. If you ignore self analysis and never gain insight into your own psyche, you will remain vulnerable to mental illness and distorted thinking patterns. Personal growth includes self analysis so you can reexamine the assumptions about the world, society, and relationships that were ingrained during your upbringing.

It's like a sailing ship with an inexperienced crew; everything is fine while the weather holds but at the first storm the crew can't handle it.

I couldn't have said it better myself but I would like to add that, in both instances, you need a strong teacher to help guide the student through that self-analysis to help them keep their heads above water and not fall into the vicious cycle of self-deprecation or narcissism and to encourage them to seek out other topics/paths.
