Back when voting had a better chance to change things.

Yes, but it doesn't mean for the better. Splitting up Canada would've been terrible for Quebecers, and other Canadians. Really. What would it have done for individuals? It was just a power grab for politicians. They filled people with lies, telling them they would be better off.

has any nation ever been created by seceding and not been invaded by the country they broke off from?

Well, Serbia and Montenegro had a peaceful split.
So did the Czech Republic and Slovakia. But those were mutual accords more than unilateral secessions.

Well I suppose you could say Canada did. But it was more like we asked England politely if we could have our own constitution (the queen can still pretend she has power, nudge, nudge) and they said yes. I think Australia is the same in that regard.

My gut feeling is... No. I think some have been successful, but certainly not for lack of being invaded.

I am but an unworldly American sir. I honestly have no clue as to the answer of your question.

Too bad, the separation of Quebec could've saved the other provinces a lot of money.

Only poor countries are allowed to split. Makes them easier to control. That's why; Scotland, Catalonia, Basque, Quebec, Texas, Arcadia, and the like will always remain under a thumb. However, countries like Sudan, Czechoslovakia, East Pakistan (Bangladesh), Vietnam, Korea, the USSR, are split, forcibly if needed, into smaller and smaller, easier to control blocks. Balkanisation isn't a fix to problems between neighbouring countries, its a weapon to divide ideaologies.

I remember that being on TV. I was happy to hear the result, but my Dad was in the mindset of "fuck'em, let those Quebecers try and make a shithole nation."

I live on the north side of the Ottawa River... things were very tense amongst many people here back then. I'm glad I had a chance to live that moment in our history.
