Some of them are. Some have two flat areas (a very popular one, lamy safari, does). In the end though, it doesn't matter very much and in some cases i've found that the pen forcing the writer to hold it at a certain angle gets in the way of style. At least i've never found it difficult to hold any fountain pen with the correct orientation.

The safari is still round mostly. I don't know if you are a collector but the pilot metro has since replaced the safari as the king of the entry FPs

I distinctly remember the safari having a three-side grip, but it's been at least five years since i last used it. I've since moved on to pencils.
