'll spell it out: If you had a weapon, you could tell him to stop, if he then tried to attack you, you could do something about it other than have your face ground up.

"Hey you. Stop doing that!" pulls out gun

"No." Keeps stealing bike

"'kay ;c" stares pointlessly with gun in hand

All you pointed out here is that people have such little respect for you that even if you pointed a gun at them, they would just keep stealing a bike.

And, you know, that a gun wouldn't suddenly a positive difference. Either you have a gun and use it to stop a theft, escalating the situation way beyond anything it would have otherwise gotten to, or you don't, which still has you escalating a situation without actually doing anything to stop the guy. Great, you pull a gun and he attacks. That's assault with a deadly weapon or murder if you pull the trigger. Congrats.

Why would I even approach the person? It's not my bike. Maybe it's his bike. Maybe he lost the key to his u-lock and needed to blow torch it free.
