This title is patently false.

Fluffy opinion piece by a guy with a vested interest in keeping human analysts relevant.

I don't see a shred of evidence for any of his assumptions.

What that means is that the predictive powers of computers will work nicely in cases where reality does not change dramatically. However, it will fail in any case where there are dramatic, unpredictable, changes in the future.

Yeah because humans can magically predict "dramatic, unpredictable changes in the future". Right.

And only birds, not machines, can glide and fly...

Only human agents, however, because they have the ability to understand and grasp meaning, can distinguish between meaningful and meaningless correlations.

I disagree with the premise of the article, but I think this sentence highlights my problem with it best. As technology stands now, this sentence is absolutely true. But it gives no reason in principle why machines could not be constructed which also make such distinctions. People will try to philosophize to no end about this, but in the final analysis the human brain is a machine too; our advantages over computers exist because we have millions of years of evolution invested in the most advanced organic machine known to exist, versus a few decades working on the silicon variety.

I understand why people want to believe machines will never match humans. It's disquieting for me as well. But this article failed to make the case that it's impossible.

Humans, of course, excel at predicting 'black swan' events.
