I was prescribed Nexium/Prilosec for 20 years. 5 years ago I switched to a plant based diet and avoided gluten. I also increased my intake of probiotics. Haven't needed Prilosec since. I'm not saying that going vegetarian will work for everyone, but it certainly worked for me.

Once someone starts eating tums or taking pills for heartburn, they can never seem to stop. This is probably by design.

I actually went to a quick conference on this type of thing at a hospital. It covered PPIs and H2ra's. Oddly enough the FDA recommends you only use PPIs for a series of weeks. They are not intended for long term since they irreversibly alter your proton pumps. H2ra on the other hand are reversible and do not permanently alter function. The problem is doctors will prescribe PPIs for things like GERD and assume the job is done. It's an interesting topic because PPIs are not taken as serious drugs.
