You should tell her to switch doctors. If the doctor is part of a larger practice, I would file a complaint. She's perfect the way she is and her carpal tunnel is probably from the way she types or whatever work task she does. Hell, find her an Asian doctor. I go to an Asian doctor and I gained 5 lbs between visits once and got asked if I was going to blow up on her, lol.

Now Asian doctors everywhere in America will suddenly get hit with an influx of normal people. Good, decent people don't take suggestions on improvement as personal insults.

Asian doctor here. Please yes, send me someone who isn't obese. I'd say about 80% of my surgical patients are obese. Some of them think theyre normal weight, and I've even had one butterbeast tell me im malnourished and need to eat. She lost a goddamn toe to diabetes later that month.

It wouldn't be hard to find an Asian doctor, in our area most doctors/dentists are Chinese or Indian. Must have been (bad) luck of the draw. I'll encourage her to look for a different provider if she keeps getting shit for her healthy weight!

Be careful not to be the other side of the coin from the fatties and declare your doctor a quack just because you don't like what he says.

If he's basing it purely on BMI then yes he's a fool, but there are other signs of malnutrition than being underweight and he should be trained to look for them.

Hmm, good point, she could have had some deficiencies in her bloodwork.

Was just about to post the same comment. Asians can be prone to vitamin D and B12 deficiencies in particular, which can lead to a lot of other shit.

She should follow up with a different doc (hopefully one who is better at communicating with patients) to double check that her bloodwork is all ok.

Unfortunately, repetitive strain injuries seem to be one of those things that you're prone to or not. I have some sort of injury in both wrists (officially carpal tunnel, but who knows), and I started getting symptoms by 12-13 just from writing by HAND. Never mind typing.

She's likely not going to find relief simply by changing her work station once. She's going to have to change it up constantly. It's probably going to be a lifelong issue for her. Being careful about the strain she puts her wrists under is something OP needs to tell her to constantly watch, or she will end up in braces and high levels of pain for months on end from pushing it.

I've had to get a wrist brace for my wrist pain. It helps during times when it's really hurting. just supports the wrist while I'm typing.

Also, I always tell people with unexplained joint pain like that to check your vit D levels. I was having a shit ton of joint pain and was afraid I was developing rheumatoid arthritis (it's in my family), doc did the blood test, no RA but I was deficient in vit D. He had me taking something like 3 times the RDA for 3 weeks and all the pain went away.

The bmi scale is actually very generous for women, so 20 is healthy and normal.

Same shit happened to me and is infuriating. It's in my post history, but basically I'm on suboxone and I went to my monthly appointment. Now, I have a habit of getting on the scale backwards. I know it's weird but I was in inpatient for a while for anorexia when I was younger and when I was starting to gain weight, I couldn't look at the scale. Whatever. Nurse takes note of this and said something like "you're barely 100 pounds soaking wet, don't worry" to which I replied "I'm over 100, and I know I'm not fat, it's just an old habit." My doctor then gave me a hard time, telling me my BMI (19) was way too low and I needed to gain about 30lbs or so. Yea that's not happening. I just played stupid and then complained to the doctor that owns the practice. Never heard a word about my weight again. I'm so angry for your Co worker right now. I have an extremely thick skin and it takes alot to piss me off or offend me, but not everyone's like that.

I just replied to you on an older post! OMG I'm a subs girl too. I assume you're a girl. Saved my fucking life, and ppl who have a problem with it (surprisingly a lot) can go suck a lemon.

I hate people, especially supposed "professionals" who take out their own weight insecurities on others. When I worked in health care, I was heavier. If I had a skinny patient I was fucking grateful that my back wouldn't be getting injured that shift, or that I wouldn't be treated like a glorified waitress. Didn't get all passive aggressive that they were thinner then me. I'm rambling, sorry!

20 is completely normal as far as I know and according to this.

Sounds like bullshit, I would have outright complained if I were her. Plus, I'm pretty certain Asians follow a slightly altered BMI chart. But, regardless, that's as normal as normal can get.

The Asians do have a BMI chart that has them at a lower weight to be healthy. This is due to certain conditions effecting them quicker than other races when weight is increased.

True dat- I'm Asian with a BMI of 19 with lots of health problems in my family tree-- diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks, blood pressure issues, strokes, you name it. I'm totally healthy at this BMI but could stand to lose maybe 5 more lbs (though it's not a major concern at all). No history of disordered eating or anything, but seriously BMI is just different for Asians (where health issues show up at a lower threshold) and for shorties like me.

Malnourishment doesn't necessarily mean "too thin." BMI says nothing about your body's ability to absorb nutrients.

If your friend really does "eat and eat" but never gains any weight, then there may be something very wrong with her ability to absorb nutrients.

There's really no way to know unless she either gets some tests our counts her calories. Either she's actually malnourished or she just doesn't eat as much as you seem to think she does.

Either way, it'd be best for her health to take the cautious route and just assume that the "malnourishment" comment may have to do with something other than her BMI and the fact that she's thin; there are, in fact, other visual indicators of malnourishment than skinniness.

I do appreciate the concern! All I have to go on is what my friend described to me, which was based on her labs (normal) and BMI. It just seemed very incongruent to me but obvi I am not a physician. Friend has started a multivitamin supplement out of caution.

I would decide one way or the other based solely on if or not my doctor was a fatty.

The doctor was probably just trying to talk her into becoming fat so he'd have more business from her. Don't trust American white doctors

It's not skinny shaming because shame isn't a damn verb. It's something you feel.

If she really wants to gain weight, she will eat more. She probably doesn't though, because a BMI of 20 looks pretty damn good on a girl, and Asian cultures value thinness a lot more than Western culture does.

[–] AislesOnFire [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Yeah, that was mostly rhetorical with the skinny shaming question. Her problem is that she eats and eats and cannot get over 99 lbs! Like some fatties " cannot lose weight." She looks fantastic, it's a psychological thing, 99 versus 100 lbs with her I think.

she eats and eats and cannot get over 99 lbs

Well then, she has either broken physics, or has a legitimate condition that is preventing her body from digesting food properly. Assuming the latter, it's probably not absorbing nutrients either, meaning she might very-well be malnourished and should really get that shit checked out.

Have her count calories for a couple weeks. It's very easy to do. My prediction: it will be less than you think.
