I wouldn't say this is a surprise at all. Quicktime wasn't relevant since the early 2000s, and has been supplanted by far superior video software. With loss in market share, added with news of security flaws, it's hardly worth it for Apple to continue spending money on developing and maintaining it.

adobe video users would disagree, without QT some stuff is broken, Adobe got no warning, but they deserve it, when you get in bed with Apple you're bound to get burned.

No one uses it, its true, but I think it was something we all thought would be around for a while.
