I make it a point to not use google (even through proxy), I like giving competition a chance. Google doesn't care about your privacy and they are creepy and big.

Check out searx, a "metasearch" engine that let's you put a bunch of search engines into one. Uncheck google in the settings if you want.

You can use privacy badger or NoScript to disable tracking (I think ublock does it too, not sure).

I agree but many don't. Many have NO IDEA how Google controls their searches with a bias. particularly school age kids.....so as a teacher of science I point it out......but they all still google by default, its like they don't know any other search engines exist

Monopolies are always a bad idea and that seems to be Google's business plan. Historically, monopolies were crushed in the past (US) and it may be time to start breaking this new breed up today. Thus, no more banks, too big to fail, or Google, Microsoft, etc., whose goal is to corner a market and dictate.

But Google is becoming the name for search engines like 'hoover' became the default for vacuum cleaners. The verb 'To Google' is almost the default e.g no one Bings?

Hell no. Do some research. The recent re-organization and "acquisition" of Google by Alphabet Inc. really says it all, and has to be the biggest in-your-face inside joke of all time.

Google is not what it seems.

Great reply..but....Could you expand?

Because I'm guessing most of us 'google' without thinking about how they edit our searches,

And I know I am no expert on this
