There is no lesson to be learned here except this:

Politics, like ignorance, is cyclical. Whether it is the USA under Teddy Roosevelt or Britain under Margaret Thatcher, nationalism and common-sense realism cycle and peak and ebb only to be replaced by the naive and hippy-dippy notions of extreme generosity from time to time. You cannot stop these cycles, only shorten the phases by using truth and reason.

If every-time a country's outrageous naivete and lack of worldliness was treated with extermination, there would be no nation standing that was older than several decades.
